Reassuring Your Child After Separation

Reassuring Your Child After Separation

After a separation or divorce children may feel confused or worried. Here are our top tips for reassuring your child at this difficult time:

  • Encourage contact little and often if your child appears to be anxious or worries about it.
  • Don’t stop contact. This can heighten anxieties and worry for your child.
  • Give your child lots of love and reassurance.
  • Keep things friendly with your child’s other parent at handover (limited emotions).
  • Keep a consistent routine for contact.
  • Show that you are happy for your child to see the other parent.
  • Accept if your child’s behaviour does regress for a time, this will usually disappear when the child begins to feel more settled.
